People think I juggle everything. I don't. I just protect one quadrant.

Sometime ago, in a one-on-one setting, one of my direct reports asked me, "Augustine, how do you do it?" Engineering, the board work, family, everything else pulling at once. The honest answer is that I don't juggle it. I lean on one old distinction and I showed him the same thing I'll point you to.

It's usually called the Eisenhower matrix, though that's a bit of a misnomer. Eisenhower was quoting someone else when he said he had two kinds of problems, the urgent and the important and that the two rarely overlap. Stephen Covey is the one who turned it into the familiar grid: urgent vs important, four boxes.

Here's the part most people miss. They spend their days in the urgent-and-important box, firefighting and call it being productive. But the real leverage sits in the quiet box: important, but not urgent. Planning. Building standards. Developing people. Learning. None of it has a deadline shouting at you, so it's the first thing to get crowded out and it's the exact work that prevents tomorrow's fires. The trap is the urgent-but-not-important box, it feels like real work because it's loud, but it moves nothing.

I didn't adopt this as a system. I mapped how I was already deciding what to touch and found it matched a principle taught in business schools. That was the surprise: I wasn't juggling. I'd just quietly learned to guard the important before the urgent ate it.
